Trend report: Summer of gingham

When you think of gingham, picnic tablecloths and traditional western shirts may spring to mind. But after viewing Chanel’s Resort collection and Christopher Kane’s spring 2010 line, you may look at this classic print in a new light.

Almost overnight, gingham has become a must-have pattern for this summer, one no longer reserved for classic shirts. You’ll see the characteristic check pattern in pieces from flouncy skirts and dresses to swimwear to lightweight blazers and pants. Designers like Junya Watanabe are creating even more interest by using the print on cuffs and with floral mixes. The scale of the pattern has become distinctively larger, and designers are playing with a juxtaposition of various scales of colors. —Nicole Balkau

The Find: Wildfox Couture’s I Heart Summer T-shirt

WILD-WS102_V2-BIGSummer may not officially start until June 21, but that didn’t stop Angelenos from savoring yesterday’s stunning, 80-degree sunshine in outdoor spaces all over town.

The weather made us love life, too. And while hanging out in Franklin Village, we spotted an “I Heart Summer” T-shirt by local label Wildfox Couture that conveyed our happiness in the most perfect of ways.

The brand printed their favorite reasons for loving the best season of all on the shirt. Here are a few:

Milk shakes, new crushes, road trips, matinees, hot nights, growing up, staying young, vintage dresses, falling in love, being free, celebrating everything.

Amen.

Available for $55 at The Daily Planet, 5931 1/2 Franklin Ave., Los Angeles. 323-957-0061. 9 a.m. to midnight every day.

We recommend (without being paid to): Theory’s Drake zip-up hoodie

Picture 2Theory is, like, so boring.

This from two 20-something hipsters as they walked past the label’s Melrose boutique on their way to Marc by Marc Jacobs, or so I assumed. I suppose they have a point–the label doesn’t exactly throw you curve balls. But like James Perse, they do luxury staples well. A new arrival in the store, the super-soft Drake cotton/viscose hoodie ($245, though I’m sure there’s an impending sale), is a good way to graduate from the American Apparel zip-ups that 4 in 10 people having mimosas for Sunday brunch in L.A. seem to be wearing. Love them, but sometimes I’d rather not look like an extra on The Sarah Silverman Program while I’m still trying to pull of a bit of a slouch look on weekend mornings.—Paul Dexter

The Drake is available here.

We recommend (without being paid to): The Battalion’s Jaclyn leggings

battalion2We’ve recently written about our sustained love of all things eco-fashion — even if we’re not always draped head-to-toe in hemp or lyocel or any of the other sustainable fabrics du jour. But we forgot to mention Linda Wong, the designer behind The Battalion, who produces chic, environmentally friendly collections that go beyond T-shirts and tunics. I’ve found the brand’s combination of fabrics (bamboo, organic cotton and spandex) to be, well, genius.

Designing for the more discerning eco-fashionista, Wong has become famous for Battalion’s wardrobe staple, the Jaclyn leggings. While they feel and fit like the softest of leggings, a thick knit, combined with detailed pockets, actually create a great skinny pant.

They’re not just the foundation for an outfit, they make the outfit, and work amazingly well with heels and blazer — or just with ballet flats and a T-shirt. Priced at a reasonable $158, it is easy to see how Jaclyn leggings have created such an impression.

battalion3For those who already worship of the basic Jaclyn legging, The Battalion offers variations in color and style each season.

For Fall 2010, a military style complete with cargo pocket and zipper detailing is another winner. You can find them online at websites like Couture Candy or The Battalion’s online shop. (Word of advice: They go fast.) —Franny Van Dyke

The Find: Tribal handbags on the cheap

I’m kind of in love with stylist Simone Harouche’s line of handmade, ethic-inspired handbags. I’m not so in love with thScreen shot 2010-04-09 at 4.02.54 PMe fact that the 8 x 15 inch version (pictured, right) currently sold at Ron Herman—the exclusive purveyor of the line—would drain nearly a grand from my bank account.

additional_8810030Sure, you can scour different street vendors and markets for a similar, yet dirt-cheap style. But a better, more time-effective option is to stop at Ten Thousand Villages, a Pasadena superstore full of fair trade goods from all over the world.

And one of the incredibly low-cost bag offerings includes a colorful, oversize tote made on a weaving co-op in Chontola, Guatemala (pictured, left). While it isn’t quite the same as Harouche’s vintage textiled bag, it’s awesome nonetheless. Doesn’t hurt that it comes with a $34.99 price tag, either.

And how nice it will be to have an extra $1,000 to actually travel somewhere exotic instead of merely looking like I did.

Obsessed: J Brand ‘Houlihan’ skinny cargo pants

For my tenth birthday party, my backyard was transformed into a petting zoo complete with bear cub, anaconda and hedgehog. And I will never forget Screen shot 2010-04-08 at 3.23.26 PMthe theme-appropriate outfit I wore: A beige safari vest, a forest green T-shirt and a pair of killer cargo shorts. Those shorts are long gone, but I’m planning on recapturing my wild youth with J Brand’s innovative take on typically baggy military wear. Stylish starlets and singers including Gwen Stefani, Rihanna and Rachel Bilson have all been spotted in the versatile piece, which I already envision with everything from T-shirts and Supergas to wood-bottomed heels and a sexy cotton tank. The bear cub probably won’t be part of the look.

The Find: What’s currently in store at the Palm Springs Outlets

It’s the absolute perfect time for a trip to Palm Springs. The Coachella crowds are nil, hotel rates are reasonable and the weather is so perfect that you could easily be on a Mexico beach, minus the nastiness that comes from a a plate of drunken late-night street meat. But after the sun stroke starts to set in and you can feel your leather face begin to form, there is nothing better than a trip to the Cabazon outlet malls. We just returned from a desert jaunt and stopped by the creme de la creme of all California outlet malls—the Desert Hills Premium Outlets, just 15 minutes outside of town. This is what we found that’s worth stopping for:

Burberry: Everyone seems to be clambering for a trench coat this season. And the obvious first choice of where to get one would be the English trench masters themselves, Burberry. At the brand’s Desert Hills Premium Outlets outpost we found a major selection of the coveted coats. Lightweight, perfect for spring versions come in black ($419 from $495), beige ($459 from $650) light pink and baby blue (each $459 from $650). A heavier, more classic tan, wool-lined version was marked $649 from $950. But a cool option for adventurous gals is to mosey over to the men’s section where a beige canvas, double breasted safari-style trench was $649 from $1,795. And yes, there were small sizes available. PS, signs told us that select coats were 30 percent off and that the discount would be taken at the register. Since we wouldn’t have been able to pay for our gas home if we made it to the register, we don’t know which coats are on clearance.

Diane Von Furstenberg: DVF is the master of creating colorful, Palm Springs-perfect pieces and her discounted storefront is no exception. Classic long and short sleeve wrap dresses in every happy, springy color and pattern combo imaginable start under $200. A pair of very now, Native American-beaded flat sandals were $63 from $210. Also cool were a pair of lace leggings, marked $142.50 from $285. Our favorite pieces were a burnt orange, matte sequin cardigan ($381 from $545) and a gold flecked suede jacket ($650 from $950). No, the prices aren’t dirt cheap. But DVF’s gear transcends seasons so you are sure to get a lot of wear out of really cute, well made clothing that you would have wanted to buy at full price anyway. Don’t miss the back of the store, where a whole wall of simple silk tops and blouses in every color under the sun were under $100 less 20 percent.

Yves Saint Laurent: We will forever be grateful for the pair of purple, runway-style rhinestone and lucite heels we once found here for under $200. This trip, the shoes weren’t as adrenaline-inducing. But there were a great selection of high, thick heeled slides in leopard print, gold and black velvet each under $200 as well. Those crazy black patent leathe rcage pumps from the runway were $599 from $1,190 and a pair of black patent and cork wedges that channel Christian Louboutin circa 2005 were $249 from $495. A bevy of bags filled every nook and cranny of the store, and our favorite was a Raffia and brown leather Metropolis tote ($449).

Barneys: Eat and pee before stopping into the lower-priced version of our favorite department store, because you may be here awhile. We happened upon a rack of Alexander Wang wares including a fantastic black fitted blazer, marked $319 from $625. A short, white, structured Co-Op brand vest was $95 from $188. JBrand jeans were $95 while the company’s cropped denim jacket was only $65. We found a black satin, size 40 shift dress by Rochas ($454.50 from $1,515) and a bright purple, size 34 blazer by Jil Sander that could fit in on a Joan Jett album cover ($414 from $1,375). An entire rack is devoted to Marc by Marc Jacobs, but we most enjoyed a light silk and cashmere metallic striped cardigan marked $79 from $120. Over in the shoe section, suede and rubber open-toe Prada platforms came in black and brown ($233 from $565) while various sizes of electric blue metallic sling back sandals by Manolo Blahnik got our blood rushing ($274 from $745). And a pair of Chloe, thick-strapped flat sandals that looked quite similar to the ones we wrote about last week were only $213 from an original retail price of $540.

Jimmy Choo: Honestly, this place blew our mind with a dizzying array of flats, boots, stilettos, plain looks and those that looked like they walked off the runway. We were too exhausted to really delve into the vast selection, so we will just say this: There is something for everyone here. If you’re in the market for a still-pricey pair of shoes, bring a wad of cash (between $400 and $700 should do the trick) and go to town. Take the extra $200 you would have spent on retail Choos and go have a genius piece of steak and some good wine. Better yet, wear your new shoes at one of Palm Springs’ luxe hotels, flash your gams and find a cute guy to buy you dinner instead. Win-win for all.

The find: A studded satchel bag at the mall

bagblog

While playing around on net-a-porter.com the other day, I came across two different bags that were both equally striking: An amazing little pouch bag by Temperley London and a cool Stella McCartney clutch covered in oversized crystals. Which is why I was kind of shocked to discover that White House/Black Market, the usually stodgy mall retailer where I once took a part time job to avoid any temptation of an employee discount, offers a melding of the two styles as if by magic.

The store’s cute satchel (my favorite handbag shape of all time, FYI) is the same shape as Temperley’s version and features both the studs and jewels of each aforementioned piece. And at $48, you don’t even need to worry about that discount you didn’t want to use in the first place.

The Find: Forever 21 Channels Fallon’s Sparkly Rhinestone Earrings.

Screen shot 2009-12-16 at 2.42.52 PMrhinestones

Fallon, designer Dana Lorenz’ line of glam rock jewelry, is rad as hell. And with pieces hovering at $300 andunder, these baubles aren’t bank breaking.

Unless your bank account is already badly busted. Luckily, it seems that the fine designers at Forever 21 have taken a liking to Fallon’s pieces, too and recreated a pair of the brand’s long rhinestone earrings for a measly $6.80. Meaning that even if you’re close to living in your car, you can give up a single filet o’fish dinner and still nab these suckers without an afterthought.
