We recommend (without being paid to): Silk T-shirt tunics by Purple Tree

ST001_BACKWe’re not big T-shirt people (blasphemy, we know, especially living in L.A.). The closest thing we usually come to sporting one on our daily pursuits is when we wear the old Bat Mitzvah shirt we slept in to Coffee Bean in the morning (the fact that we don’t love T-shirts has no bearing on the fact that we’re slobs).

But 23 year-old Sarah Nathanson has helped change our position with Purple Tree, her line of cute, casual screen printed gear. Created as Nathanson’s senior thesis while studying art and design at the University of Michigan, Purple Tree uses nature and music inspired prints that come off as cool and carefree. And these hoodies, tees and tanks come for both guys and gals.

But our favorite Purple Tree designs aren’t T-shirts at all: They’re breezy, free-flowing tunics made from modal and silk. We especially love a floral silhouette printed style ($60) that slightly reminds us of a Kara Walker cut out (albeit with a sunnier message).

Perfect to wear with cords, cut-offs or even your favorite pair of “I Rocked with Rachel” boxer shorts during your morning caffeine run. Either one.

We recommend (without being paid to): Stacey Bendet of Alice + Olivia’s line for MAC

macMAC is but one of many wildly successful beauty lines, and as we all know, one that partners with various celebrities and organizations, from UNICEF to Milk to Ms. Gaga.

Add another luminary to that list. Recently the brand teamed up with Alice + Olivia’s Stacey Bendet for a limited-edition collection that hits counters this week. The collaboration, consisting of 10 items, is decisively New York-meets-L.A. sophistication.

Why cosmetics? According to Bendet: “Clothing and cosmetics should [both] be whimsical. They should both make you smile and feel flirtatious.” In that spirit, the packaging and colors of the line emulate candy with three pigments – deep black, frosty white/pink and a sparkly turquoise. There are also three new shades of MAC’s Dazzleglass Crème lip gloss (shown) including “I Want Candy”, in electric yellow.

Heed the advice of makeup artistry director Gregory Arlt and apply the gloss atop a matte red lipstick for a chic luster. – Nicole Hayden

Summer ’10′s best travel totes and satchels

There are literally hundreds of trendy-travel satchels on the market these days, but I believe the best are timeless, durable, simple and usually unisex. Thus my selects are are chic enough for a woman and tough enough for a man.

john and mary

The Large Classic Carry All Bag by John & Mary ($99), available here.

Classic describes this bag perfectly from materials to function. It has a canvas body and simple leather details, though its hands-down best feature is a medicine-bag opening that makes for easy access to your belongings.

ll bean.jpeg

Boat and Tote Bag by LL Bean ($18 to $30), available here.

You can’t talk tote bags without mentioning the classic boat bag manufactured since the 1940s. LL Bean may not be the most fashion-forward company, but they know quality and timelessness. Today the Boat and Tote is available in a plethora of colors and sizes, but I prefer the largest size with dark green trim. Go the extra mile and have it monogrammed.

filson

Small duffle bag by Filson ($225), available here.

Three years ago Filson was sold strictly at country stores and hunting shops; now you can find the brand alongside designer duds at Barneys and Bloomingdale’s. It may be trendy this year, but you will use it forever. Made of 100% cotton twill, this bag is water-resistant and easy to clean.

clarevivier

Camp Vivier Bag by Clare Vivier ($230), available here.

Clare Vivier is known for making chic leather bags and clutches for women, but any man would look dashing toting this canvas-and-leather bag. The army green color and Italian leather trim adds some toughness to a traditionally female bag. And the smaller-sized tote works well as a carry-on.

tumi.jpeg

Alpha Soft Small Travel Satchel by Tumi ($295), available here.

Tumi bags are known for being expensive, but worth every penny. This smaller duffle bag is made of traditional ballistic nylon. Translation: looks good and lasts forever. It also stuffs easily into the overhead bin and holds days worth of clothes and accessories. A bag perfect for the ladies who overpack. —Mary Frances Van Dyke

Sale: A mid-summer night’s swim trunk at Steven Alan

stevenalanIf I had been as diligent with the P90X workout plan this summer as I had hoped, I probably would have bought these Steven Alan trunks in their West Hollywood store yesterday (the $148 swimsuit is now on sale for $88). Wearing them likely requires you to have run a marathon in the last three months or at least have shown up to kettleball class at Equinox on a weekly basis. But while the length doesn’t leave much in the way for forgiveness, the cut overall doesn’t make you feel like you’re shopping in the boys department. And check out the store’s small but brilliant vintage watch collection while you’re there. — Paul Dexter

Latest local/web sales entice even those who insist on bare midriff

he5b03-p000794-mainWhile most of us at Style Section L.A. didn’t do our high school GPAs any favor by our mediocre test scores in math, we at least know what 70% off means. As stores transition to fall merch you’ll find an increasing abundance of steals. Here are just a few that we’ve recently found:

Shopbop: The giant online store is selling brands like Vena Cava, Loeffler Randall, Rag
& Bone
and more for up to 70% off.

Opening Ceremony: Sizes come few and far between, but it’s worth the time to dig
around in order to score pieces by Alexander Wang, Opening Ceremony, Band of
Outsiders, Acne, etc for 70% off.

Built By Wendy: Unless you live in a major city, or even if you do, the brand is
somewhat difficult to stumble upon. Which is why their 70% off sale online is that much
more amazing.

Theory: The go to-brand for young professionals is now offering much of their
stock for incredible price cuts of under $100. –Nicole Hayden

chloeshadesWith handbags and clutches becoming smaller and smaller this season, you might wonder what you can actually fit inside them aside from a tube of lipstick and some keys. Thanks to Chloe’s new Dionee sunglasses, you need not to worry about cramming your entire life into your purse. Two reasons to visit Madewell 1937 this summer: Lizzie Fortunato jewelry and Shareen Vintage

While many stores are having sales in an effort move out last season’s styles and boost sales, Madewell 1937 is using a different tactic to get the attention of shoppers. The retailer teamed with jewelry company Lizzie Fortunato and vintage maven Shareen Mitchell, of Shareen Vintage to offer fresh fashion to its customers. Think of them as “pop-up shops” within a shop.
Sister team behind Lizzie Fortunato began designing jewelry in 2002. Their pieces are exquisite and high fashion, but manufactured with untraditional materials such as string, rope, beads and fabric rather than diamonds and pearls. This spring the coveted jewelry company created a collection exclusively for Madewell stores. The pieces are sold both in-store and on newly launched ecommerce boutique. The Best part – everything is reasonably priced. Bracelets range from $32-$40 and necklaces range from $55 to $118. Almost too good to be true.
Starting June 17th, Madewell will be selling select pieces from Shareen Vintage. The vintage company started in a booth at The Melrose Trading Post in Los Angeles and due to popular demand, expanded to a larger space downtown, and recently to the Big Apple. Shareen carries loads of affordable, quality vintage from the past century. Madewell has done the dirty work by choosing some of the best pieces for a summer wardrobe. The store will be selling summery dresses, skirts and blouses. Judging by the what Madewell has been producing this past year, I have no doubt their selection will be superb. These specialty vintage items are available for a limited time, in store only.
These collaborations are a great way to freshen up your summer wardrobe without making a large investment. Happy shopping!
