Things we want right away: a pair of bold colored trousers

The sun is shining. The birds are out. And you can finally get a tiny bit of tan from walking in the Ralph’s parking lot. Yes, spring has sprung. And this season — for once — the black pant won’t be your go-to trouser. Instead, make bold color your new best friend when it comes to the bottom half of your body. The same bright, spring 2011 hues seen all over Prabal Gurung dresses, Jil Sander handbags and Calvin Klein award show ensembles have made their way to trousers, too. And we think they are a great way to snazz up a usual suit routine or, better yet, a sophisticated stand-in for a cocktail dress. Below are our favorite pants in all colors of the rainbow at price points made for every crayon in the box.

From left to right: Topshop linen belted trousers, $78 | Diane von Furstenberg Georginne pant, $285 | Gucci wrap-front silk pants, $805 | 3.1 Philip Lim tuxedo trouser, $425 | Anthropologie slouch-and-narrow trousers, $128

CLOSED, Germany’s answer to J. Crew, gets more open in the U.S.

German based clothier CLOSED , which is considered the J. Crew of Germany, is making a bigger presence in the U.S. and we are wide eyed with excitement. The brand started in the 70s designing military inspired pieces for men and women with denim innovation being their major claim to fame. In fact, the company went out on a jeans limb by making the first dungarees that weren’t your standard five-pocket style. And today chinos and denim are still core of the company’s collections, though the brand also makes great tops, sweet floral dresses, cardigans and more.

Basic bottoms come in different washes and fits for each season, including flare, straight skinny and cropped in dark, light, patchwork and beyond. And they’re available in a uniformly large variety for both sexes. For spring and summer, the brand has embraced color with chinos in bights and neons.

The women’s collection stunned us for Fall 2011. Relaxed cords, fitted blazers and denim tops will merchandise perfectly into any woman’s closet. Of course, the trusty favorite denim jumpsuit makes an appearance. If only all classics could be this cool.

In Los Angeles CLOSED is sold exclusively at Fred Segal. But you can fine the brand at Barney’s and Intermix in other cities nationwide. Can’t find a store near you? CLOSED sells online and ships to the states, with prices being what you’ve come to expect from a premium denim brand — think approximately $180-$200 for pants, $339 for a cashmere sweater dress and $149 for a white oxford button down. Score!

The classic white shirt, updated for spring

Five days into the new year and I’m already ready for the spring collections. Despite the fact that there are two months of chilly temperatures ahead, I’m over the sweaters, jackets and vests I was obsessed with mere months ago. And one of the spring “trends” that makes me yearn for the season ahead is the classic white shirt. Michael Kors, Jil Sander and Preen are just a few of the boldfaced fashion names showing stark, minimalist button downs for spring. Classic white button downs are always in style but I really love ones in luxe silks and playful cuts. Here are a few of my favorite updated versions of the white oxford, which I fully plan on wearing long before the weather turns warm.

Row one: Elizabeth and James Marion blouse, $295, Levi’s repair shirt, $78, Seine box blouse, $44

Row two: J.Crew Blythe blouse, $98, The Row Eva blouse, $675, Queen’s Wardrobe ruffle blouse, $65

Shorts in December? Why yes — only in L.A.

This year is finally over – thank effing god. And even those of you who haven’t been dragged into a field and ravaged by Wall Street’s misguided logic (yet) could probably use a little good cheer.

Enter one of our favorite happy finds of the season – Franklin + Gower’s preppy-but-funky holiday jacket and short suit combo, part of the local line’s Bespoke LA collection, which we recently stumbled upon at Ron Robinson at Fred Segal.

Yes, we’re aware that outside of California and luxurious warm winter weather, suit jackets with matching shorts (Men’s custom blazer, $400; Women’s custom blazer, $380. Men’s shorts, $105-$125; Women’s shorts, $95) might seem a little out of season (read: bonkers) during the holidays. But hey – that’s why we live here and not in a sub-zero climate where heavy snowfall literally causes the collapse of football stadiums (sorry, Vikings fans).

Franklin + Gower’s holiday line, which is available for both men and women, comes in fine wale corduroy, cotton, and soft wool blends. And you can customize the trims and linings — think bold Hawaiian flower prints, stripes or fine French blue to go with your choice of jacket or short fabric. Pants are also available, by the way ($185), and you can custom-design individual pieces via the company Web site as well.

For our West Coast-centric purposes, the cuts and fit are classic, the materials are soft and comfy, the colors are fun, and just wait until you see some of the jacket linings and shorts trim. The Bespoke LA collection is exclusive to Robinson’s Fred Segal boutique.

Add a little winter sunshine and what more could you ask for?

A secure job, health benefits, home equity and economic stability, perhaps. But that’s for 2011.

We recommend without being paid to: The Marrakesh Jean from MiH

content/uploads/2010/11/heave4000112867_p1_v1_m56577569832079969_254x500.jpg”>I have a massive denim collection. When I say collection, I mean that I haven’t gotten rid of a pair of jeans in 6 years. And lately, I’ve started wearing my super flares from a few years back again — which I find to be the perfect match for sky-scraping platforms and a loose blouse.

And of all the flares out there, the Marrakesh Jean from MiH ($189) is the perfect way to mix up your skinny jean rut. I am getting a little sick of seeing women in skinny jeans. Live a little! The Marrakesh has a mid to high-rise and a lean flair. The jeans feature simple back pockets to give your butt the perfect contour without adding bulk. I promise you will have them in your denim stock for years to come without being considered a hoarder. Remember, fashion always comes back around.

Look book we love: Corey Lynn Calter Spring 2011

Sure, the odd fall weather hasn’t yet afforded us the luxury of taking our shearling out of storage (first monsoon-style rain, now blistering November heat. We feel like locusts and our first born are sure to be next). But that doesn’t mean we aren’t already dreaming of new outfits come spring. And today we received Corey Lynn Calter‘s Spring 2011 look book, complete with images of her colorful, vintage-inspired day dresses that look like they came from Carrie Bradshaw’s closet and billowy, luxe hippie gear that we’d like to see in our own. As an added bonus, uber-stylish actress Krysten Ritter (who we frequently see shopping at Confederacy) has collaborated with Calter on a Parisian-esque, black and white dress (last photo at bottom), the proceeds of which will benefit international children’s organization Dare to Share.

The line doesn’t ship to stores until the end of March. Which should give us just enough time to enjoy a few days of fall/winter dressing. But only if we’re lucky.

Gentle Fawn’s modern vintage-inspired clothes make us happy for Fall

Who says you can’t mix business with pleasure? Certainly not us. And in the case of husband-and-wife designers Daniel and Carla Hogg, merging personal and professional life has paid off extraordinarily.

When the couple set out for a day of vintage shopping 2003, they never dreamed that the trip would end up being the catalyst for starting their own business, which they launched after seeing a rare collection of antique ceramic fawns that now serve as the logo for the company.

Under the motto that Gentle Fawn is a “line of clothing that speaks for people who follow their own paths in life,” the brand has a great mix of comfort, edge, and vintage-inspired feel in their clothes. We are personally liking the Sgt. Pepper-inspired military peacoat seen at right ($188).

The entire collection ranges between $40-200, and has found fans in Glee’s Lea Michele and Twilight’s Anna Kendrick. To view the full Fall collection visit Gentle Fawn.

L.A trend forecaster Janine Blain launches a clothing line

Over the weekend, longtime trend forecaster Janine Blain hosted a garden party at her Pasadena home to unveil jblain, her contemporary clothing line that arrives in stores next spring.

The line consists of billowy, easy-to-wear separates including sheer, tribal printed blouses, casual maxi dresses, tie dyed half tops and luxuriously cut silk blouses and cardigans. And every piece is extremely versatile. We envisioned a long, blue and white floral printed dress with both heels and flats; a flowing silk blouse worn over jeans or with a leather skirt. And the day-to-night goods easily transcend age brackets and fashion fearlessness, too, with interchangeable goods that can be easily styled and accessorized.

Blain is the former vice president of trend forecasting agency The Doneger Group. And leave it to someone who always knows “the next big thing” to create a collection of completely wearable, timeless pieces that contain very little fad.

The line will retail from $40 to $160 and is being introduced to wholesale buyers during L.A. Market this week.

And though Blain clearly knows how to spot a sellable line when she sees one, she remained humble when receiving compliments at her launch party last Sunday.

“I just hope the buyers like it.”

Look book we love: Lanston

We aren’t usually that excited when a look book for a T-shirt line comes our way. It isn’t that we don’t like T-shirts (even though the majority that we own do happen to be freebies scored at Bat Mitzvahs back in the day). We just find their look books to be somewhat staid, to say the least. But this one that we just got from local label Lanston is, in our opinion, quite cool.

The line of luxuriously cut, super-soft basics is helmed by young L.A. native Krisabelle Ann Tan, who is also behind cool contemporary brand Krisa. And Tan’s latest look book features mod turtle neck dresses, slouchy tops and a model with minimal makeup and seriously covetable long hair. It almost feels like swinging ’60s London — only in a way that isn’t costumey and manages to be totally wearable for L.A., no?

Pieces in the line retail for under $100 and are available at revolveclothing.com and shopbop.com.

Surf brand Roxy leaves the beach behind and ups their style

Nothing makes us weep for a beach day like when the thermostat spikes to 115F. Ah, autumn in Southern California.
How apropos that swim-and-surfwear line Roxy decided to preview its upcoming fall and holiday collections during the record-breaking heat.

It’s not typically our style, but the label has been making a more fashion-forward push under new designer Summer Rapp (it’s all in a name, right?), part of a bid to appeal to a wider, more style-conscious audience.

We favored Roxy’s fall outerwear, like the cropped black faux-leather jacket and the olive green zip-up with a cowl neck. While the upcoming collections looked cute, keep your eye out for next year’s summer collection, which has a Native American-inspired aesthetic and some very stylish looks — a departure from the brand’s typical action sports offering.
