Need a cool holiday gift? Get an early start at Adrian Grenier’s Shft pop-up shop this week.

a href=”http://stylesectionla.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/4615673279_238e4336e7_o-1.jpeg”>

We know, it isn’t even Halloween. But at the speed time seems to fly these days, the holidays will be here faster than the time it took POTUS to get fried chicken and waffles at Roscoe’s earlier this week.

May we suggest stopping by the second L.A. incarnation of Adrian Grenier’s Shft pop-up shop for all your unique gift buying needs. The shop is a live-action version of Shft.com, the popular eco-friendly website started by the actor and producer Peter Glatzer in 2009.

Cool “green” knickknacks include a bamboo MacBook case by Silva ($179.99), hand lotion made from biofuel by Further ($12.99) and beautiful tables made from salvaged wood by designer William Stranger ($3,200). There’s also a slew of fine art photographs from the likes of Melodie McDaniel, who did the still photography on the set of Brad Pitt’s Se7en in 1995 and has directed Madonna videos.

The shop — which feels like part retail store, part lofty art gallery — runs through Thursday, at which time you can visit the website for all of your holiday shopping needs. But the instant gratification of leaving with your goods and the slim chance that you might see Vinnie Chase milling about is reason enough to stop by, we think.

11 a.m. until 3 p.m., through Thursday. 161 South La Brea Ave., L.A. shft.com

We’re not the only ones who are crazy for caftans at WGACA

Last night, we stopped by a party at What Goes Around Comes Around to officially fete their new La Brea Avenue digs. And when we arrived — as we always do when visiting the vintage emporium — we made a beeline to the back where an entire rack is devoted to tunics and caftans, our old-lady outfit accouterment of choice.

But this time around, instead of sifting through the Earth Wind and Fire-ready dashikis, Indian-made embroidered numbers and prairie-style Mama Cass muu-muus all by our lonesome, we happened upon a fellow vintage fashion freak who is just as enamored with long, loose fitting garments as we are.

“Oh I live in caftans,” Jessica Lynn told us, wearing a bright metallic one that once belonged to her grandmother. Lynn, a friend of WGACA co-owner Gerard Maione, was the co-owner of vintage store Parker Pettit, a groovy shop tucked into an Abbot Kinney cottage in Venice that closed in 2009. But it turned out she was much happier wearing caftans than selling them. “I absolutely hated it,” she said of owning her store. “We used to sit in the store and drink all day. I was an awful salesperson.”

Today, Lynn lives in Venice and has an entire garage full of vintage fashion — 1960s caftans, ’70s-style muu-muus and trippy tunics included.

“Caftans are amazing because you can hike them up a little, show some leg and hide your stomach,” she said. “They conceal all.”

Room for One: Agyness Deyn hosts a bash to celebrate the launch of Rebecca Minkoff’s new shop-in-shop at Confederacy in Los Feliz

The times are a’changin’ at Confederacy in Los Feliz, where the boutique and supermodel Ageyness Deyn hosted a cool kid-packed party on Tuesday night to celebrate Rebecca Minkoff’s new shop-in-shop and the store’s new focus on menswear.

Minkoff’s collaboration with Confederacy co-owner and uber-stylist Ilaria Urbinati stems back to 2009, when she helped design Minkoff’s re-relaunched ready to wear collection.

“Becky is one of my oldest friends,” Urbinati said at her Tuesday night soiree, which brought out boldfacers including Ashton Kutcher, Chris Pine, Lauren Conrad and Glee star Jayma Mays. “I think it’s the perfect line for this area in L.A., because her stuff is very ‘downtown New York girl.’ That’s very Silverlake.”

Confederacy, which previously carried an assortment of womenswear by the likes of  Proenza Schouler and Phillip Lim, is now devoting the entire front half of the shop to Minkoff’s flirty skirts, dresses, blazers and covetable leather goods (Urbinati admitted to owning over 30 of the designer’s bags). While the back of the store will continue to serve the boys with dapper Albert Hammond Jr. suiting, Simon Spurr button downs and Band of Outsiders bowties. The simplified merchandise mix will allow Urbinati to more easily focus on styling, which she still does full time  (client Chris Evans has been keeping her quite busy with Captain America premieres on both coasts this week).

“I should have ‘overwhelmed.com’ stamped on my forehead,” she mused, hiding any signs of stress in a pretty high-neck fuchsia dress from Zara.

Of course we can’t forget party co-host Agyness Deyn, who met Minkoff on a New York street corner four years ago during a purse exchange, which Minkoff jokingly compared to a drug deal.

“She has such a great mind for design,” Deyn said of Minkoff’s aesthetic. “It’s very fierce in a subtly kind of way.” The British model, who once dated Strokes member and friend-of-Confederacy Albert Hammond Jr., is currently enjoying an L.A. summer filled with hiking and surfing.

Urbinati seemed to be enjoying herself, too, as she and Lauren Conrad complemented each other’s outfits and carried on about Urbinati’s April wedding, when she married photographer Eric Ray Davidson at a rented out summer camp in Texas.

And of course she seemed excited about her store’s new trajectory.

“We’ve had the same designers for the past couple of seasons,” she said. “It’s time to do some fresh meat.”

Banana Republic’s new concept store at South Coast Plaza knocks our chinos off

You know that scene in the first “Sex and the City” movie when Big unveils Carrie’s new closet, a.k.a. our dream room? Well, we just experienced what she must have felt when we visited the new Banana Republic Revolution concept store at South Coast Plaza.

Designed like a closet for a fantasy couple, the two floor, space — which is roughly 20,000 square-feet — takes shopping to a whole new level. Lined with boutique-like shops within a shop, all of Banana Republic’s collections get their own personal space. With special sections such as petites, heritage, the weekend chino, merino and tailored business, the space feels like several stores with only one receipt to sign at the end. A likely long recepit, but a single one nonetheless.

With round anchors in the store housing shoes, handbags, and jewelry (including the new Chan Luu collection) come caffeinated and wearing comfy shoes. You’ll be there for a while.

Stephen Webster opening jewelry flagship on Rodeo Drive

He’s ready to take Rodeo Drive by storm; and according to his blog he expects Tiffany’s to, “place the ‘we are moving’ signs up any day.”

Stephen Webster, the popular London-based jeweler, is opening up his first U.S. flagship store in Beverly Hills next month. Webster, whose famous fans include Kate Moss, Katy Perry and Rihanna, is known for his signature style of semi-precious and fine jewelry pieces infused with rock and roll-style whimsy (think diamond-encrusted skulls and bleeding hearts).

The boutique will span two floors, with the first floor housing Webster’s full collections for both men and women and the second acting as a lounge/gallery space called “SW Presents…,” a space to house guest artists, photographers and other creative exhibitions. The art-meets-retail concept is new for Webster, who said that the brand is, “shifting to become an all encompassing lifestyle experience.”

Looks like the competition just got stiffer in 90210.

But should Tiffany and Co. start packing up the engagement rings? Uh, probably not.

Swanky jewelry house Roseark opens a second location on Montana in Santa Monica

-2-1West Hollywood jewelry boutique Roseark launched a second L.A. location this week — on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica.

Like its orginal museum-esque digs, owned by Launch My Line season one (and only?) winner Kathy Rose, the boutique carries limited edition jewelry pieces from brands such as Jennifer Meyer Jewelry, K. Brunini, Jodi Guber, Anndra Neen, Gintare, Karma and Rose’ own namesake collection.

But this time out, Rose will also curate a small selection of clothing from local designers to complement the jewelry collections (one can only assume her experience creating a collection on the Bravo reality show precipitated this foray into fashion).

Rose and her husband, co-owner Rick Rose, hosted an intimate opening event last week with Meyer and Shiva Rose that lured Amber Valetta, among other jewelry junkies.

Roseark, 1111 Montana Ave., Santa Monica. Open Monday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Angela Missoni drops by L.A. to launch new Rodeo outpost

missoni2It’s hard to beat the exquisite knits and patterns coming out of Missoni these days. Even though the weather here isn’t exactly screaming for cashmere, Angela Missoni arrived in LA this week to christen the corner of Rodeo and Little Santa Monica with her family’s impeccable designs. The new Rodeo boutique is only Missoni’s second in the country after New York.

Since taking over the creative direction at the label in 1996, “A lot has happened in the world of fashion… the players have changed, everything has changed,” Missoni told Style Section L.A. “So for an independent, family-owned brand like us, it is an accomplishment to still be around and to be relevant.”

missoni1The collection is “very closely related to the California lifestyle… it’s very relaxed but sophisticated,” she said. ” The last several years have seen the collection expand on its classical platform by developing a young, contemporary energy, with a ‘Gypset” layer of cool that combines layered prints and colors in a modern way.

London-based design team Kinmoth Monfreda designed both the interior and exterior of the missoni3building, which incorporates painted aluminum from just outside of Milan that wraps the building exterior in a woven manner—evocative, perhaps of the way any Missoni garment sublimely wraps the body. —Hellin Kay

The Reformation opens today in old Satine space

reformationReworked vintage brand The Reformation, which is helmed by YaYa designer Yael Aflalo and Chi Bui, is opening its new, smaller digs on West 3rd Street today (Friday, Feb. 26).

The partners have transformed the old Satine boutique into a rustic, rough-hewn temple of reborn fashion (think romantic, cleverly tailored blouses, dresses and knits, ranging from $100 to $200).

The partners had originally opened a store in a comparatively cavernous space on La Brea, but quickly realized that in this dour economy, no one needs to be saddled with that amount of overhead. Lots of luck in your new space, Ya and Chi!
