John Varvatos joins forces with Rock Paper Photo for iconic rock photography showing

In the ’70s, the posh hotel we currently know as the Andaz West Hollywood on Sunset Boulevard was a Hyatt hotel dubbed “the Riot House,” on account of the wild antics of guest bands including Led Zeppelin, The Who and the Rolling Stones. The photo above is one of the more tame moments in the [...]

Inside the shoot: Carolina Cerisola’s insane Lanvin wedges

If you haven’t been to our homepage yet today, you’re missing our originally-produced photo shoot with Buenos Aires-born, L.A.-based dancer Carolina Cerisola. Styled by Ronit Nabi and shot by Raquel Olivo at Movement Studio LA, Cerisola, who spent six years headlining Ivan Kane’s now-shuttered Forty Deuce, sported these ridiculously awesome Lanvin wedges. And would you believe that the snakeskin is actually not skin at all but canvas? Crazy.

Click here to read about Cerisola’s cool career path from go-go dancer to landing on-tour with Sting. And see her in cozy Alexander Wang knits, Isabel Marant shorts and yes, the sky-high Lanvin stunners above.

Swoon.

Buy it for the, uh, clothes: Hilary Rhoda brings high fashion to Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue

The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue is many things (over here, we call it thinspiration) — fashion glossy not usually being one of them. But the 2011 book, which was released last Tuesday, injects some sartorial savvy into the scantily-clothed mix courtesy of 23 year-old model Hilary Rhoda.

Rhoda, as you may know, comes from a high fashion background with past stints strutting catwalks for Zac Posen, Rag & Bone and Balenciaga, just to name a few. Not generally paying much attention to the Swimsuit Issue ourselves, we didn’t realize that this is Rhoda’s third time appearing as a bathing beauty in the sports publication’s annual issue.

And, quite appropriately, the Only Hearts crop top and vintage-inspired Marysia bloomer bottoms Rhoda dons in one look could be something out of Vogue.

Also adding to the issue’s style quotient is a groovy, multi-strand turquoise necklace courtesy of Tiger Lily, a local line designed by Malibu denizen Heather Gardner.

Gardner’s necklace, which retails for $275 and is also worn by Brooklyn Decker in the shoot, proves that layers of small, effortless accessories can work on both land and sea — a trick we’ll surely remember come swimsuit season.

And on that note, we’re off to the gym.

Monday afternoon gorgeousness: Phyllis Diller plays Vegas, 1964

I’m extremely honored to be in Vegas at the moment, covering the WWDMagic apparel trade show as one of thirty bloggers chosen to participate on behalf of the Teen Vogue blogger lounge. And this morning, while walking through the convention center concourse on my way to speak on a panel about the business of blogging, I came across this extremely cool photograph of legendary comedienne Phyllis Diller. The shot was taken in 1964, the same year that Diller made her Vegas debut at The Flamingo. Check out those booties and that killer shift — the ensemble is just as relevant today as it was over forty years back. I wish Diller was still headlining here this week, my cohorts and I would be sitting center row. Guess we’ll have to settle for Kim Kardashian’s appearance at the new Marquee at the Cosmopolitan tonight, instead.

Wednesday afternoon gorgeousness: Happy birthday, Carol Alt

Before there was a Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, there was supermodel Carol Alt — a girl-next-door stunner who embodied the bold looks of the ’80s on the covers of Bazaar, Paris Vogue and Elle, just to name a few. Alt, who is also a major proponent of the raw foods movement, turns 50 today looking better than most ladies we know in their twenties. Must be all those leafy greens.

Tuesday evening gorgeousness: Erte, the Art Deco king, is born

On this day in 1892, prolific 20th century designer Romain de Tirtoff – better known as Erte — was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. The designer, who died in 1990 at the age of 97, briefly worked with fellow fashion icon Paul Poiret before creating elaborate, exotic dance costumes for the dance halls of Paris (Notable performance-world clientele included reported spy Mata Hari). Oriental and Egyptian styles were frequently spotted in shows including Irving Berlin’s “Music Box” and the famed Ziegfield Follies. And fashion historians claim Erte to have drawn inspiration from the 1922 exhumation of King Tut’s tomb. Pretty cool source of inspiration if you ask us, no?

From the archives: Kay Panabaker’s September, 2009 Style Section L.A. photo shoot

We always know a good starlet-to-be when we see one. And sure enough, actress Kay Panabaker — who we shot in September, 2009 — seems to be everywhere these days. Prior to her current small screen stint on ABC’s No Ordinary Family, the 20 year-old Texas native sat down with us at Palihouse to dish on fedoras, her favorite brands and making jewelry from scratch. One of our favorite shots is above. The rest, along with our full interview, can be found by clicking here.

Wednesday afternoon gorgeousness: Jackie adds an O

On this day in 1968, Jackie Kennedy officially earned her “O” by marrying Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis on Skorpios, his private Greek isle. Unlike the fairytale dress she wore to her first wedding, the former first lady chose a simple lace top and pleated skirt from Valentino’s spring/summer ’68 collection for the new nuptials. As always, she looked perfect.

We’ve made no attempts to hide our love for Band of Outsiders. Recently we went on the company’s website and happened upon these polaroid-style shots taken in and around LACMA.
