While reading Deadline.com, we learned about The Man’s Guide to Love, a website and soon to be movie and book by married writers/directors Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett. The website, which came before all the other stuff, is a collection of slickly-shot, man-on-the-street interviews asking regular guys for their advice on love.
And the interviews — which were shot largely in L.A. with men of all ages — are downright endearing (one dude talks about how he was once too scared to kiss a girl, remembered his regret for next time, and ended up with the balls needed to kiss the woman who ultimately became his wife. Die of adorableness.).
In the “tips and tricks” section, we watched a segment with a 31 year-old fella named Brian who, like the others, was asked “If you were to pass along a piece of advice on the topic of love, what would you say?”
Brian’s answer?
“Never underestimate the appeal of a good hat.” True that. Just last week we totally made eyes with a guy who wore a checkered newsboy cap that was most definitely workin’ for him. And think of how supremely sexy it is when a man wears his favorite broken-in sports hat that he’s had forever? Good times.
It’s refreshing to be reminded just how mushy men can be. Especially in a city where prospective mates hide in your bathroom for extended periods of time, sell drugs and therefore pay for your date in cash and get violently ill in the middle of sex.
Jim Moore, GQ’s creative director, hit the nail on the head with his endorsement of this mini houndstooth peak lapel suit from Armani’s fall collection. Could it be that the skinny suit is finally passe?
We don’t bat an eyelash when Helena Bonham Carter graces the red carpet with her interesting fashion choices. However, at tonight’s Golden Globes the actress took interesting to a whole new level when she choose to wear two different colored shoes underneath her Vivienne Westwood dress. Thanks, but no thanks.
She’s resplendent in Rodarte. Diaphonous in Dior. But Victor & Rolf? Natalie Portman’s choice for the Golden Globes is as flawed as the Black Swan script itself. Granted we assume it will win anyway this evening. And she does deserve an Oscar nom for her on-point brilliance in an otherwise migraine-inducing film.
Elizabeth Taylor. Elisabeth Moss. Watch your Z’s and S’s, peeps.
But the Twitter consensus seems to favor her choice of frock. Indeed, the Donna Karan dress suits our favorite thespian from Mad Men. Distinctive, if not breathtaking. We just wish her stylist would have called Martin Katz for a perfectly understated necklace.
After Marchesa’s revelatory fall 2010 collection, one has to wonder whether this will be the definitive red carpet year for designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig. Judging by the proliferation of Golden Globe after parties this year (if that’s a reliable indicator–we’re not economists here), 2011 may take on a more-is-more life of its own. Marchesa is nearly without comparison when it comes to wow factor; this gown on Olivia Wilde is a prime specimen. Flawless.
The Milan men’s shows for fall 2011 are upon us, and WWD has collected inspiration sketches from some of the players (subscription required). Our favorite isn’t Armani, or Zegna, or Missoni, but Umit Benan, whose spring 2011 collection was so bad ass haberdashy genius that we look forward to seeing what he does next. The models were swarthy perfection in his last presentation, and we expect to see a similar rebuke of malnourished runway norms again soon. —Paul Dexter
It’s been a few days, but we forgot we shot this pic of dueling dinosaurs with party people in the background at First Fridays, hosted by Los Angeles County’s Natural History Museum. The event has become a bona fide scene. Throngs of hipsters observing meteorites and mastodon skeletons.
While the music was earsplitting and lines to get a cool one stretched a little too long, it’s well worth checking out. Dress funky.
Dates for upcoming First Fridays are listed on the museum’s website.
In case you missed it, we recently wrote about our visit to Jerome C. Rousseau’s apartment-cum-design studio in Beachwood Canyon for a look at his superlative spring 2011 collection. Photographer Jordan Rae Lake snapped this shot of the designer, whose bowtie, haircut and Québécois accent = cute overload.
