Dress like a Facebook billionaire for under $300

We saw The Social Network the other evening and, plainly put, were blown away. Like, pissed when it was over blown away. And at the risk of sounding soul-less, we don’t actually think Mark Zuckerberg is that bad of a guy (all is fair in love, war and business, no?). But his style, on the other hand, is pretty gnarly.

In the film, costume designer Jacqueline West — who earned an Oscar nom in 2009 for her work on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button outfitted actor Jesse Eisenberg in Zuckerberg’s standard uniform of fleeces, hoodies and plastic Adidas flip flops. The sandals are bad enough away from the fungus-filled showers of a college dorm. But West perfectly captured Zuckerberg’s lack of shoe sense by pairing them with socks. Sexy.

And during key meetings with lawyers and investors, the Zuckerberg character rarely strayed from the kind of casual lounge wear friends tend to leave at our house and never recover.

But the awkward computer programmer/student/genius/billionaire look isn’t hard to achieve if you’re so inclined. And lucky for those of us who have yet to make our tech fortune, it isn’t expensive, either.

Gap pullover hoodie, $49.50. gap.com

Gap standard-fit jeans, $49.99.gap.com

North Face Denali fleece, $165. thenorthface.com

Adidas Adilette slides, $25. shopadidas.com

Champion Crew socks, $9.94. target.com

Total: $299.43

Congratulations, you’re ready to get some VC and take over the world. Now buy a decent suit.

From the SSLA archives: Wall Street costume designer Ellen Mirojnick talks about Gordon Gekko’s new “shade of shark.”

Behind every well-dressed man, there’s a great woman. And her name is Ellen Mirojnick.

The veteran costume designer has been in the business a long time: She’s designed for films ranging from Fatal Attraction, Basic Instinct andShowgirls to Starship Troopers and Solitary Man—and was nominated for a BAFTA award for her work costuming Robert Downey Jr. as the famous tramp in the period piece Chaplin.

Starting today, you’ll see this New York native’s latest handiwork inWall Street: Money Never Sleeps, the much-anticipated follow-up to Oliver Stone’s 1987 Wall Street. Gone are the suspenders. Instead you’ll see Gordon Gekko and company looking sharp in crisply tailored handmade suits. A glass of scotch remains in hand, of course. That’s timeless.

We caught up with the woman who’s dressed some of the best-looking men and women in Hollywood to see how it’s done.

Monday afternoon gorgeousness: Boardwalk Empire makes the ’20s roar

We all have an era we wish we could have lived through. And ours happens to be the 1920s (dancing at an illegal speakeasy in red lips and a beaded flapper dress sounds like the perfect Saturday night, no?). Which is why we were overjoyed when Boardwalk Empire finally premiered on HBO last evening.

Was the show as amazing as we’d hoped? Eh, not really (though we have high hopes and plan on sticking around). But the costumes, on the other hand, were quite out of this world. Emmy-winning costume designer John Dunn, who counts an episode of Mad Men, Sienna Miller’s Factory Girl and Casino among his credits, created a world of rich furs, elaborate accessories and, of course, beaded flapper dresses.

“I don’t like to do boring clothing.” Dunn told Esquire.com. We don’t like to do boring anything, which is why we wish we lived in the Twenties in the first place. Guess we’ll just have to settle for red lipstick, daydreams and Sunday night TV.

Thursday afternoon gorgeousness: Beverly Hills, 9-02-10

In honor of what is seriously the raddest day on the calendar, 9-02-10, a shot of the original, angstiest teens on television. The new class of Beverly Hills, 90210 doesn’t hold a candle to these kids and their bitchin’ printed button downs, L.A. Gear sneakers and denim tuxedos. Who wants to meet up at the Peach Pit?

The interiors of Sex and the City 2

sex-and-the-city-movie-set-design-07

I haven’t seen Sex and the City 2. To be honest, I might not see Sex and the City 2 (I know people that walked out). While I was obsessed with the series, it took me a good six months after its release to see the first movie. (And that was only because I was going through a trauma and a friend thought I’d feel better at the sight of Carrie being left at the altar. I didn’t.)

And after coming across this Elle Decor spread of the amazing sets created for the film, I still don’t want to see the movie. But I do want to live in Carrie and Big’s apartment (I’d gladly take up a cot in their closet, too).

Click here for the rest of the photos and info about individual pieces used on set.

And I have to ask, what did you guys think of the movie?

Style tribute: Lena Horne

1002172

“My father said, ‘I can get a maid for my daughter. I don’t want her in the movies playing maids.’ ” is a quote that pretty much sums up the moxie of legendary performer Lena Horne, who died on Sunday at the age of 92.

According to the New York Times, Horne was the first black performer to be signed to a long term contract by a major Hollywood studio. If you’re not familiar with Horne’s illustrious career or her work in advancing civil rights, the Times‘ brief synopsis of her awe-inpsiring life is not to be missed.

After the jump, find some of our favorite photos of the sophisticatedly stunning singer and her signature looks — turbans, in-hair florals and one-shouldered dresses, among them.
