Friday morning gorgeousness: Rick Owens and the end of days

I may not always love what California native Rick Owens sends down the runway. But the spirit in which he does always captivates me. In a nutshell he usually says in a nihilistic-chic way, If the apocalypse is nigh, then here’s your uniform. You may as well look good as the seventh seal is opened.

Owens showed his spring collection in Paris today and our good pal Giovanni shot the goods for WWD (click here for the article; subscrip required). As the paper confirmed, this is indeed one of the best collections we’ve seen from him in many a season.

At Missoni, channeling Edina Monsoon in Marrakech

You can never look at a Missoni collection and infer a statement on our changing times. Like Eric Cartman’s appearance on the Maury Povich Show, the label does what it wants. Prevailing trends be damned. And it’s hard not to love this Italian family for that. I couldn’t get enough of their chunky knits last fall; now they’ve appeared to take a more-is-more approach for which Ab Fab’s Edina Monsoon would likely swap her LaCroix obsession.

Prada: It’s all about the shades

Miuccia’s spring 2011 show in Milan yesterday was a whimsically glamourous melange, to say the least (click here for a slideshow). Prada herself called it “minimal baroque” — quite possibly the most delicious oxymoron ever crafted, and one that somehow works. But there’s nothing minimal about these sunglasses, perhaps best worn while downing a bottle of Pierrer-Jouet Belle Epoque at the Chateau. Who will be the first to wear in young Hollywood? Our money is on Carey Mulligan.

Finally, fashion houses get this whole “Internet” thing.

The democratization of fashion shows via live stream is fulfilled. And with it heralds a new age of interest for rarified clothes, even if they are increasingly out-of-sync with the continued grim reality of the American economy.

But at the very least we’re now able to further appreciate fashion for the visual art form that it is. Every label we can count is now doing a live stream of their collections in vivid, large video. Even Prada, which only a few months back finally got around to opening an ecommerce site for US consumers. Yes, YouTube also has the runways you want to see, but there’s something more evocative about watching them on a fashion label’s own site, and not be bothered with annoying ads for ABC’s My Generation.

Cathy Horyn, known for her uninvites to shows from Giorgio Armani to Carolina Herrera resulting from her, well, honesty, got it right in a 2008 article:

“Two hours after a hot show like Prada or Balenciaga anyone, not just reporters, can pull up images on the Internet and post their opinions on blogs around the world. The wonder to me is not why a designer like Mr. Armani bans a journalist. Rather it is why he doesn’t use the power of digital technology to take his message directly to the public, effectively knocking out journalists who complain that his clothes are out of touch.”

Thursday afternoon gorgeousness: affluent cowgirl fringe at Ralph Lauren

Thankfully there were no overalls —nor overly-patchworked denim—in Ralph Lauren’s spring 2011 collection shown today. Just breezy luxe, wild west-meets flapper fringe and bordello chic with a pair of silver metallic hot pants for good measure.

At Band of Outsiders, a Sternberg doppelganger

While taking another look at Band of Outsiders’ spring collection shown over the weekend, for at least ten seconds I thought the model pictured here (left) was actually the label’s L.A.-based designer, Scott Sternberg (right), incognito with George Harrison hair.

The collection’s ethos is a little slouchy for what we’ve grown accustomed to seeing from BoO—the blazers are so impeccably tailored, the shirts likewise, the shoes always looking up at you as if to say Shouldn’t you be wearing me on a 40-foot sailboat boat moored off Nantucket? Meanwhile you’re in line at the NomNom truck.

And the new boots from this collection? Uh, killer. —Paul Dexter

Guest blogger: Rochelle Gores Fredston’s New York Fashion Week chronicles, day 2

My second day in New York has come to a close and I can’t wait to share with you my full day of events, shows and parties!

My day started with the Carolina Herrera show. Mrs. Herrera is very popular as a designer and a friend so she always has an A+ front row (as well as second row, third row, etc.) I spotted Anna Wintour, L.A.- based designer Minnie Mortimer, Emilia Fanjul Pfeifler, Joe Zee and Nina Garcia. And among the looks that flowed down the runway were lady-like dresses and Herrera’s signature poplin starched white collared shirts paired with knee length skirts. Olive green continues to be an “it” color for spring (so don’t get rid of those military themed items yet!) and oranges, reds and magenta all popped up as well. And the looks were more tailored this year, which I prefer to the voluminous skirts Herrera used last season. Overall, the collection had an Asian influence with lots of embroidery.

All the models included in the show had their hair neatly pulled back with high top hats with large brims. The hats were customarily worn by men in Korea but looked elegantly chic on the models. And Herrera also paired looks with rectangle-shaped belts.

The show was quickly followed by Alexandre Herchcovitch’s runway and can I just say that the audience LOVED him and his line — people were swooning over him. Herchcovitch showed color block shifts, graphic bright prints, and futuristic themes (neons are back in season, especially for accessories), which were followed by him walking the runway as a model! It was hilarious and what a crowd pleaser!

Later I met up with Lindsay Johnson, my buyer who I work with hand-in-hand at ARCADE Boutique. In all, we bought seven lines together and she went on to see another twelve lines. This season I am seeing lots of prints and color. The accessories are to die for! We saw amazing beach bags and scarves that I know you will all love!

After a full day, it was time to indulge in a few fashion parties. Dressed in one of my favorite backless Yigal Azrouel dresses, which I accessorized with a fabulous Lee Angel Necklace, I was ready to begin the night — it was back to Lincoln Center for the Harper’s Bazaar accessories Event. Check out the below shoes by Donna Karan!

After browsing through the many featured accessories it was off to the Vogue Party. Anne Vincent, who is one of the special events directors at Vogue, waved us down and was clearly recognizable with her large crystal estate ring from the new Lia Sophia La Belle Rose collection, which she had taken right off the hand of a guest at my dinner the night before! We snacked on sushi and sipped on white wine. Of course, everyone was dressed to the nines in sky-high heels and fun cocktail dresses.

To refresh and refuel, it was time for a quick dinner with my friend Annelise Peterson at The Lion, where we caught up on everything fashion. The Lion is the place to be this week with Tom Ford, Karl Lagerfeld and Marc Jacobs having all been spotted there. Our dinner wouldn’t have been complete without a celeb sighting and who better to fulfill that role than the one and only Rachel Zoe, who was dramatically dressed in a fur shawl complete with her signature red lipstick.

I ended the night with friends Brittny Gastineau and Doug Reinhart at the OK! Magazine party which was packed with celebs and after we all danced (and Doug ordered champagne bottles with sparklers!), it was time to head home for some beauty sleep in preparation for another big day. — Rochelle Gores Fredston

Guest blogger: Rochelle Gores Fredston’s New York Fashion Week chronicles

For the next week, Rochelle Gores Fredston, owner of West Hollywood’s Arcade boutique and fashionable wine country connoisseur, has lovingly agreed to bring us the scoop from New York Fashion Week. She’ll chronicle her journey while dashing from show to show, sipping champagne at after parties and hanging out with people we only read about in magazines. In other words, she’ll be making us just a little more jealous than usual (in a good way, of course).

Read on.

Greetings from New York, which, this week, is truly the world’s most fashionable city! I’m so excited that I have this opportunity to share a backstage or, rather, front row view of all the clothes, celebrities, and special events that make up Mercedes Benz Fashion Week with Style Section L.A.!

Last night I landed in New York and ran to a fitting for the Luca Luca show. They have graciously invited me to sit frot row of their show and chose something from the collection to wear. It was a hard choice. But I finally chose a 1950s-style, prim-and-proper purple dress with a metallic-like trench. As always Luca Luca’s clothes look amazing and I can’t wait to see them on the runway come Tuesday.

In New York, if it’s not fashion it’s food. So right after the fitting I headed to Lavo (a new restaurant/club hot spot on the east side) where I was thrown an intimate dinner by several friends: Cooper Ray (who many of you may know from his blog Social Primer), Gilt Group’s Christian Leone and my long time publicists (who I count as my friends) Carol Bell and Gigi Howard. They gathered an interesting, eclectic group of their nearest and dearest including actresses Aisha Tyler, Mad Men’s Abigail Spencer (who stunned wearing Michael Kors and Lia Sophia) and Perrey Reeves from Entourage (which just filmed in Arcade a few months back). Not to mention Vogue staffers Anne Vincent and Sarah Brown and stylist Amanda Ross.

The meal was served family style and really allowed me a chance to go from table to table getting to know each guest. And as I’m a huge fan of West Coast red wine (my staff at ARCADE always mentions how I seem to carry a lot of items in varying shades of bordeaux which might be a reflection of this love and also a huge fall trend) we stuck to one of my favorite Oregon Pinots, which kept flowing way past midnight. My New York friends assured me this was a sign of a very good party since it was not only a Sunday night, but a night before fashion week and everyone had to be up early in the morning.

When we finally walked out of the restaurant we spotted a huge line of people waiting to get into the party downstairs to celebrate Zac Posens’ Zspoke line. For a half a second I was tempted to pop in but with a 10 a.m. show for Carolina Herrera (who designed my wedding gown), I decided a good night’s rest was probably best. — Rochelle Gores Fredston
