The Way We Wore’s Doris Raymond plays Match.com with Proenza Schouler and Alex & Lee

Anyone who has ever uttered more than two words to Doris Raymond, who owns high end vintage emporium The Way We Wore, knows that when it comes to style, the woman knows her shit (we recently spent two hours talking to Raymond about vintage costume jewelry and retained more during the conversation than from our entire high school career).

Not only does Raymond have an expert eye when it comes to sourcing old school Missoni skirts, 1970s metallic Galanos gowns and sparkly evening numbers worn by the likes of Whitney Houston and Gladys Knight, she’s apparently a yente, too, in that Raymond is quite adept at playing matchmaker.

Case in point: When Proenza Schouler was looking to partner with famed 70s costume jewelers Alex & Lee on pieces for their resort 2012 line, it was Raymond who brought the bunch together. According to Racked, Raymond discovered the hippie jewelers at the Sausalito Flea Market in San Francisco, where she had a vintage stall in the 1970s and Alex & Lee designers Alex Mate and Lee Brooks were avid shoppers.

Last year, Raymond acquired a bevy of Alex & Lee’s renowned oversized wares. And since her La Brea Avenue shop is an inspirational Mecca for heavy hitting designers such as Proenza Schouler (John Galliano was a regular before the world decided he was irrelevant), a love affair blossomed and Raymond put everyone in touch.

Pretty cool.

Even cooler is that Raymond still has a few original pieces from the Alex & Lee lot she featured last year, available to those lucky enough to be able to spend upwards of $1,000 on an amazing piece of costume jewelry worthy of being passed down to their kids.

And Doris, if you know any cute, straight single guys — we’re totally down.

Cool collab o’the day: Missoni x Havaianas

Growing up in the wintery depths of the Midwest, summer was never actually summer until you could wear your Havaianas. And now the Brazilian flip flop masters have teamed up with Missoni on a four-piece, limited edition collection of colorful sandals that launch today. They’re definitely darling. But thinking about Havaianas of our past that we’ve destroyed, lost, given away and damaged — not to mention the things those suckers have stepped in — make us question the sanity in spending $60 (or roughly three times the price of a standard style) on a pair. But that doesn’t rule out the completely cute zig zag print, Rasta-esque espadrilles that, at $130, feel like a bit more bang for the buck. Especially in L.A., where summer never ends.

Misoni x Havianas, $70 — $130. Available at Nordstrom, Bloomingdales and havianas.com

Disney broadens its trendy fashion movie tie-ins with Hayden-Harnett’s “Pirates” collection

The Disney merch machine is at it again — tapping cult-fave fashion brands to create film-themed collections for the goofy new “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” movie.

Part of the new Disney Signature collection, Brooklyn’s Hayden-Hartnett created a leather buckle cuff, printed silk and chiffon scarves and a few slouchy bags with hardware that feels very buried-treasure.

Prices range from $78 to $498, and the collection will be available as of May 1. See the brand’s website for more details.

More from the collection…

Whattaya think? The bag on the left is cute, but the hardware on the cuff and bag on the right feels sorta low-budge.

SSLA in NYC: Zang Toi’s theatrical Fall runway show

Over-the-top would be one word we would use to describe Zang Toi’s Fall 2011 runway show this past Sunday night at Lincoln Center. Toi is certainly not a designer that would ever be accused of playing it safe. He caters to the woman who knows not of the word “budget.” Case in point: the finale look, a black silk gazar ballgown with nude beaded french lace encrusted with crystals, costs an astounding $30,000. The only thing more outrageous than the price tag was the model herself– none other than Jill Zarin, from The Real Housewives of New York.

But casting choices aside, we thought Toi’s show was actually quite an awe-inspiring sight to behold. The collection started off with a gentle progression of coats, pantsuits, pencil skirts crafted out of Loro Piana Italian cashmere and wool. The focus then turned to shades of green, with a standout being a black silk velvet gown with emerald Swarovski crystals adorning the dress, that was dramatically unveiled underneath an emerald saga royal fox stole.

We have never seen a crowd applaud and gasp in sheer child-like delight as much as they did for the Toi show. And the defending standing ovation that the designer received showed us that to the elite audience, there really is no price limit where fashion is concerned.

Georgia May Jagger x Hudson Jeans = Genius

Georgia May Jagger isn’t just a model for Hudson Jeans anymore, she’s also their newest and youngest designer. The 19 year-old daughter of legendary Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger and model mom Jerry Hall has collaborated on a denim line with Hudson that is set to hit stores in March. The collaboration features five styles raging from basic blues to sexy side lace ups. And from the looks of images of Jagger modeling her own designs, they’re sure to be pretty fabulous. Fabulous enough, at least, to tide us over until this spring, when the line will be available at Neiman Marcus.

Tara Swennen latest celebrity stylist to launch collection for HSN

Super stylist Tara Swennen — who has dressed starlets including Kristen Stewart, Mila Kunis and Kate Beckensale — is the latest celebrity stylemaker to create a collection for HSN.

As part of the Hot in Hollywood line of contemporary trend-focused offerings, Swennen’s goods include velvet blazers, cozy capes and one-shoulder dresses. Cute stuff.

We had the pleasure of sitting next to Swennen at a dinner a few weeks back and must say that she is one of the coolest fashion personalities we’ve ever come in contact with (the fact that she shares our love of both the Olive Garden and cheese rolls from Red Lobster could have something to do with our high regard). We also found her excitement for the then-upcoming HSN appearance a refreshing change from the standard jaded responses we’re used to hearing from industry pros who get to do very cool things.

Like Rachel Zoe’s collection before her (coincidentally, Swennen assisted Zoe at the beginning of her career), this HSN line is wallet friendly ranging from just $19.90 for a headband to $129.90 for a sequin dress and is available on television and HSN.com.

Europeans always have the good stuff — the best health care, the hottest guys and yes, the coolest fashion too. And Valentino’s capsule collection for Gap is no exception. The seven-piece line of sculptural military-inspired garb is quite awesome — as in, expect American’s to e-Bay the crap out of this stuff. But if you’d rather not associate yourself with Meg Whitman’s former company, Colette in Paris is currently selling the collection on their website. If you’re serious about owning one of the pieces, which range from roughly £70 to £150 ($91 to $195.50), we suggest you hurry — a T-shirt sold out while we were writing this.

Hurley, Pendleton and a pop-up shop: Three reasons to get energized for the holidays

You may still be polishing off your Halloween candy, but Thanksgiving is a mere two weeks a way. And that means that the holiday shopping season is currently in full swing. And come Friday, Hurley — the SoCal brand known for their skater-inspired wares — is opening a holiday pop up shop at The American at Brand in Glendale. But the real news here is that the shop will carry Hurley’s way cool collaborative collection with Pendleton.

The collaboration features hats, shirts, jackets and hoodies — many pieces utilizing Pendleton’s signature Navajo-style designs (which we kicked ourselves for missing out on their collab with Opening Ceremony a few seasons back, and this one is way more wallet friendly). For the ladies, let us recommend the crop jacket (below left, $299). And for the men, we love the long sleeve boardshirt (below right, $110) — a simple wool button down with a sexy coziness Who would have though taking fashion cues from skaters could give you such stylish street cred?

Hurley pop-up shop at The Americana at Brand. 889 Americana Way, Suite 330, Glendale, CA 91210. 818.637.8982. Monday – Thursday, 10:00am – 9:00pm, Friday – Saturday, 10:00am – 10:00pm, Sunday, 11:00am – 8:00pm, through New Years Eve.
