Maybe it’s a result of the unusually cold weather we’re having in L.A. thus evening, but several of tonight’s red carpet queens chose gowns with high necklines that thwarted any possibility of pulling a Janet Jackson.

Nicole Kidman wore Dior couture to the 83rd annual Academy Awards this evening, despite the fact that Dior designer John Galliano was suspended from his post after being arrested on charges of making antisemitic slurs late Thursday night (perhaps she is the only actress in Hollywood without a Jewish manager).

Sometimes, the best things are found at the bottom. And dramatic trains made quite an impact on the red carpet of the 83rd annual Academy Awards in Hollywood today. These are a few of our favorite:

Ceremony host Anne Hathaway in the master of red, Valentino

Marisa Tomei in a mid-century vintage number by Charles James

Hilary Swank in Gucci

The Independent Spirit Awards were held yesterday in Santa Monica. Despite freezing temperatures that had us cranking up our heater, many of Hollywood’s leading ladies chose to dress frocks that had us pining for summer:

Kate Moss, everyone’s favorite model/clothing line collaborator/ perfume purveyor and ad page staple is selling her London manse, reports celeb real estate blog The Realestalker. And for $11,252,500 you can live in the seven-level structure in London’s posh St. John’s Wood neighborhood. Moss fans may recall this being the home where the basement, quite literally, flooded full of crap after a plumbing fiasco in 2010.
The house features 4-5 bedrooms, 4 full and 2 half baths and an expansive, green backyard. The space is decorated in a contemporary style that feels very Parisian pied-à-terre — think smokey Lucite chairs, a sleek, modern kitchen and a Tracey Emin neon heart buzzing in the background. Moss reportedly asked Emin, an artist known for her uncanny ability to shock and awe, to display work at her upcoming wedding to Kills guitarist Jamie Hince.
And it all can be yours for $11,252,500 — clearly a bargain. But before you send a check, we suggest inspecting the basement.

To prepare ourselves for the 13th Annual Costume Designers Guild (CDG) Awards being held tomorrow night at the Beverly Hills Hilton, we’re listening to very personal song selections from the playlist Alice and Wonderland costumer Colleen Atwood recently created as part of KCRW’s Guest DJ project (listen or download the radio show here).
The Award-Winning Costume Designer’s selections parallel pinpoint moments in her lifetime as well as colorful career. These intimate vignettes include memories of her father and his best friend, a cowboy named Cactus, as well as a car ride with her daughter (who finished off lyrics to Jimi Hendrix’s ‘The Wind Cries Mary’) as a young mother in Seattle.
In the 1960s, she watched her peers turn into flower children, but Atwood faced the harsh reality of teenage pregnancy and raising a child. Drugs and psychedelics were not an option; Jimi Hendrix was a lyrical escape into the era.
Atwood’s ‘Everything I Am’ by Kanye West hip-hop selection may seem odd, but it is actually a family anthem for herself and her two daughters. “It [is] so about people, like myself, that maybe didn’t do everything right at one point in their life, but you just kind of soldier through it and get on with it,” Atwood admits.
Atwood’s success story captivates the listener as she reveals her favorite morning song for early call times, U2’s ‘Beautiful Day’, or the illustration of Jeff Buckley’s ‘Hallelujah’ “drifting through the rafters” of her workroom which was constructed in an abandoned adobe structure in a colonial Mexican town while shooting ‘The Mexican’.
Atwood’s illustrious career can barely be summarized in this blog post. But we will say her accolades include a major industry award nomination or achievement almost every year since 1995. This award season, Atwood has a CDG Award nomination for Excellence in Fantasy Film as well as an Academy Award nomination for Best Achievement in Costume Design for her work on Tim Burton’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’.
Enjoy the easy listening. It’s as inspiring as a TED video!

It is no surprise that this week’s fugliest outfit comes from the red carpet of the Golden Globes. Michelle Williams has been stunning during her recent publicity appearances for Blue Valentine. But last Sunday the cute-as-a-button actress had a major lapse in judgment. Go Fug Yourself couldn’t have called it better. Not only is the frock down right ugly – the daisy pattern is reserved for those under age 10 – it’s frumpy. The umpire waist does nothing for Williams’ petite figure and the armholes are cutting into her armpits. Then, there is the color. While I commend her for resisting the fake n’bake frenzy in Hollywood, Ms. Williams must realize certain hues do not work with pale skin — ie: this dress for example, does not work with her pale skin. I am at a loss as to why she and her stylist thought this color was in any way flattering. Let’s hope she learned her lesson, the fugly way.

We don’t bat an eyelash when Helena Bonham Carter graces the red carpet with her interesting fashion choices. However, at tonight’s Golden Globes the actress took interesting to a whole new level when she choose to wear two different colored shoes underneath her Vivienne Westwood dress. Thanks, but no thanks.

Check out this recent picture that the Fug Girls found of Jessica Simpson looking like a snow beast.
Oh my dear Jessica, when will you learn. While I love that you have finally embraced your curves (which we know from the few hundred interviews where you’ve said so) I don’t quite understand why you continue to dress in such a tacky, unflattering way.
White and black leggings with a horizontal pattern should be reserved for 10-year-old girls or, if one must indulge, the privacy of one’s own home. The plot thickens with the cliché ski bunny parka and an out-of-place Dior handbag.
But those fur boots took me over the edge.
Bottom line, too much fur and too much spandex — curves or not.
