Nomad Two Worlds, a collaborative art project between photographer Russell James and indigenous artists from Australia’s Outback, is rolling into L.A. with its Nomads Two Worlds exhibition, on display from Wednesday through March 2.
And its bringing Donna Karan with it. The doyenne of convertible dressing, who does all kinds of culture-preserving work through her foundation UrbanZen, has collaborated with Nomad artist Clifton Bieundurry, a Walmajarri artist from the central Kimberley, on 10 one-off body-length scarves (seen here on Adriana Lima.)
So they’re retailing for $6,500, which would be ridiculous if every penny weren’t going to help kids and preserve tenuous native cultures. But of course it is, which justifies the insane pricing.
But we’re even more excited about the exhibit itself. And Karan’s free, open-to-the-public speaking engagement.
Yes, you heard right. The designer will be speaking in a panel discussion with UCLA professor Jessica Cattelino and Dr. Richard Walley, a Nyungar Indigenous Australian elder, on the challenges of Indigenous cultures in the modern world this Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Exhibit and discussion: Pier 59 Studios West, 2415 Michigan Ave., Santa Monica. Entrance is free 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
