Lollapalooza 2010: How to save your hair from Chicago-style humidity

Having spent 21 of my 25 years living in the humid dungeon otherwise known as Chicago, I’ve experienced more than a few bad hair days. And if you’re heading to Lolla this weekend to see the likes of Lady Gaga, The Black Keys and Raphael Saadiq perform on Lake Michigan, you’re in for a steam-filled treat — 60 to 75 percent humidity throughout the entire fest.

But fret not. As they say, there’s an app for that — or rather a bevy of products to keep you from looking like you’ve stuck your hand in a socket. These are a few faves:

Kerastase Nutritive Oleo-Relax Serum, $28.95. folica.com

This tried-and-true serum has saved my frizzy locks from looking that way on many, many occasions. And recently I’ve found that in addition to running a dab through damp hair after the shower, putting a tiny drop on individual sections of dry hair before ironing lends that just-blown-out look that is usually hard to come by at home.

Phytodefrisant Botanical Hair Relaxing Balm, $26. sephora.com

On the days I let my hair dry au natural, I need a product to keep curls in tact (unless I am trying to model my ‘do after the homeless woman who lives on my corner). And Phyto’s Relaxing Balm, which is technically designed for straight hair, is genius at giving me springy curls that have shape, bounce and shine. Who knew?

Kiehl’s Superbly Smoothing Argan Conditioner, $19. Kiehls.com

I generally gravitate toward cheapy conditioners so I can glob half the bottle on without guilt. But even though this one from Kiehl’s — which just launched last month — is a little bit more than I typically like to spend, it works. And because it contains argan oil instead of silicon (like the majority of frizz fighting products), this conditioner doesn’t leave you with a Gulf-sized oil slick the day after use.
