The day has finally arrived — Santa Monica Place is opening tomorrow! We’ve been lucky enough to get a sneak peek, and trust us, you’ll want to see this marvel of modern retailing for yourself. (Don’t believe us? Go see  the fitting room “pods” at Bloomingdale’s that descend from the ceiling. Talk about space age).

And lucky for you, there’s no shortage of opening-day festivities to accompany you on your first shopping spree at the new mall — window or otherwise. Here are some grand opening events of note:

Fluxus: Designer Jeffery Sebelia will be on hand all weekend long, as will complimentary beverages and vintage film screenings. Located at 2nd St. Entrance (next to Nordstrom on the ground level).

Sketchers: Every time we see a commercial for Shape Ups, we wonder if wearing shoes so horribly unattractive will actually make quarters bounce off our ass (if the answer is yes, we’re in). In honor of the brand’s newest store, Shape Ups fitness expert Jill Brown will be on hand to answer the question in person on Saturday, August 7 from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Let us know what she says.

Bloomingdale’s: A slew of gift-with-purchase promotions from the likes of Chanel beauty, Hudson jeans and John Varvatos are happening all day long. But the big draw (for us, anyway) is a personal appearance by Nation LTD founder Jen Menchaca. The first 50 purchasers will get a denim tote bag. From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The food court: As much as we love standard lamp-heated mall fare, don’t expect any of it here. Instead, Santa Monica Place’s rooftop dining deck includes tacos from Pinches, two sushi outposts, gourmet pizza and middle eastern kabobs. And tomorrow night, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.  KCRW’s Jason Bentley will be spinning a little music to dine by. Bon appetit.
