Summer ’10′s best travel totes and satchels

There are literally hundreds of trendy-travel satchels on the market these days, but I believe the best are timeless, durable, simple and usually unisex. Thus my selects are are chic enough for a woman and tough enough for a man. —Mary Frances Van Dyke

john and mary

The Large Classic Carry All Bag by John & Mary ($99), available here.

Classic describes this bag perfectly, from its materials to its function. It has a canvas body and simple leather details, though its hands-down best feature is a medicine-bag opening that makes for easy access to your belongings.

ll bean.jpeg

Boat and Tote Bag by L.L. Bean ($18 to $30), available here.

You can’t talk tote bags without mentioning the classic boat bag manufactured since the 1940s. L.L. Bean may not be the most fashion-forward company, but they know quality and timelessness. Today the Boat and Tote is available in a plethora of colors and sizes, but I prefer the largest size with dark green trim. Go the extra mile and have it monogrammed.

filson

Small duffle bag by Filson ($225), available here.

Three years ago Filson was sold strictly at country stores and hunting shops; now you can find the brand alongside designer duds at Barneys and Bloomingdale’s. It may be trendy this year, but you will use it forever. Made of 100% cotton twill, this bag is water-resistant and easy to clean.

clarevivier

Camp Vivier Bag by Clare Vivier ($230), available here.

Clare Vivier is known for making chic leather bags and clutches for women, but any man would look dashing toting this canvas-and-leather bag. The army green color and Italian leather trim adds some toughness to a traditionally female bag. And the smaller-sized tote works well as a carry-on.

tumi.jpeg

Alpha Soft Small Travel Satchel by Tumi ($295), available here.

Tumi bags are known for being expensive, but worth every penny. This smaller duffle bag is made of traditional ballistic nylon. Translation: looks good and lasts forever. It also stuffs easily into the overhead bin and holds days worth of clothes and accessories. A bag perfect for the ladies who overpack.
