Most designer collaborations make me yawn these days. I don’t care which vaunted fashion label will be available on aisle 5 at Target because I’m not motivated enough to show up when the doors open on a Tuesday morning to buy, say, a Rodarte T-shirt manufactured god-knows-where.
WWD reports on one collab worth looking into, however: Michael Bastian will launch a women’s line with Gant, whom he already works with on a men’s line (shown here).
Per Jean Scheidnes at the paper:
Gant and Bastian are “planning a coed presentation during September’s New York Fashion Week. The lacrosse-themed inaugural men’s collection was revealed in February in a locker-room tableau that suited the sporty styles. But the women’s will have a sharper fashion edge.
“It would be easy to do a female equivalent of the sporty, clean, healthy American dude, but I don’t think that’s naturally the woman in this guy’s life. I don’t see magnetism between those two. The girl is more of a fashion girl, not a classic preppy. She’s more open to playing around with her look,” said Bastian.
Bastian, as we’ve written about many times on this blog, is one of American menswear’s great talents, and the collaboration with Gant is hit — I believe it hits stores in August. Can’t wait to see what the women’s collection will look like. — Krista Jennings

This is great coverage!
