When I think of Ann Taylor, I think of ill-fitting long-sleeved jersey shirts and dowdy cable-knit sweaters.
But as I discovered last night at the brand’s Fall preview at WeHo’s Soho House, my notions about the brand are as arcane as a pair of chord culottes.
The label is on a rejuvenation kick, said company president Christine Beauchamp, thanks to newish designer Lisa Axelson — who’s been hella busy sprucing up the line to reflect a more fashion-conscious customer.
The Fall collection, which hung on racks and was spread across tables in an upstairs room in the Soho House, featured gorgeous, feminine silhouettes (pencil skirts, bod-con dresses and oversized knits) and an array of blingy jewelry employing bird’s nests of faux pearls and rhinestones.
I particularly lusted after the wool coats (running around $300 each) — specifically a boxy black asymmetrical number with huge, loose lapels; and a fab camel-colored wool coat with zero embellishment that would look amazing with jeans and boots all winter long.
Amidst the few admiring fashion editors at the cocktail hour were a smattering of minor celebs, including Sophia Bush (dressed in a full-on gown), Anna Kendrick, Eve and Taraji P. Henson, who practically risked her life to hold the elevator for me. (Thanks, Taraj!)
