As always, celebs turned up in droves to the Costume Institute’s annual Metropolitan Ball (the red carpet entrances ended just now), vying eagerly to make Vogue‘s next “It Girl” column. And per usual, the fashion was fab, if — at times — a little drab.

Claire Danes is pretty much flawless all the time, but in this Burberry confection, she looks downright stunning (though I would have ditched the necklace). I also love that her hair is down and loose, as she always looks so buttoned-up. Gucci Westman did her makeup, which is also super-sassy and much darker than her usual fare. “We wanted it to be really cool — like that London cool, since she was wearing Burberry,” said Westman.
Zoe Saldana toasted Americana (the theme of the evening and event) with this navy one-shouldered Calvin Klein sheath. It photographs a little demure, but the cool texture (which we can almost discern in the photo) means it’s probably breath-taking in real life.
Leave it to la Wintour to go Parisian on a night celebrating American fashion. The Devil is wearing Chanel — and a fussy-looking Chanel at that.
Emma Watson is the spokesperson for Burberry, so it makes sense that her white, uber-detailed gown is from the British house. And I’m loving everything about it — the slutty slit, the one-shoulder, the innocent color. Delish.
Joy Bryant is babe-ilicious, but this Marchesa dress is way too much frock for her. It feels like she’s being swallowed by tulle. And it just doesn’t suit her sporty L.A. vibe.
Oprah donned a HUGE Oscar de la Renta ball gown (she’s pictured here with ODLR himself) and all in all, I think she pulled it off. Pretty color on her, nicely fitted at the waist. It’s all good.
It takes an insane figure to pull of a formfitting white long-sleeved gown with zero embellishment. And Diane Kruger‘s got the goods. Still, the minimalist Calvin Klein sheath — paired with a severe hairdo — doesn’t exactly scream “fun.” More like “nun.”

Emma Watson looks amazing!! I love every single thing about her look: the dress, the hair, the makeup, the bag, the shoes, the accessories, all of it is PERFECT!
So far, Claire is my fave, although I agree, the necklace could have been ditched. Diane looks uncomfortable, a lack of joy in her presentation & demeanor. Joy’s dress is gorgeous, but it’s too much for her; there is no Joy, just “the dress.”
Thx as always for the great coverage!
