Most of the headlines today regarding the coroner’s report on the death of Alexander McQueen focused on the significant amounts of cocaine found in his bloodstream, in combination with sleeping pills. I was more intrigued by the fact that he wrote his suicide note on the cover of Descent of Man, Charles Darwin’s brilliant work on the theory of sexual selection. Foolish, perhaps, to read into his decision to use the cover of this particular book for his final missive (one that ended in “Please look after my dogs. Sorry, I love you. Lee.”) But perhaps this was yet another piece of evidence that fashion has lost a learned and thoughtful man, as well as a brilliant designer. —Paul Dexter
