Michael Schmidt is one of L.A. fashion’s unsung gems. The custom costume designer has created some of the most memorable looks in rock ‘n roll history — from Tina Turner and Cher‘s chain-mail dresses to Debbie Harry’s amazing razor blade dress (now in the Museum of Rock ‘n Roll).
And the nimble-fingered designer is responsible for the insane-o outfit Fergie wore on American Idol last night. The scaled masterpiece was hand-sewn by Schmidt, using 8,500 metal scales and thousands of Swarovski crystals. All in all, it took him three months to make. We hope he’s icing his overworked hands right now. Bravo!
