Diane Keaton, one of my favorite all-time style icons, hosted a group of fashion and beauty editors at Mr. Chow’s restaurant in Beverly Hills yesterday to promote L’Oreal’s new Paris Age Perfect Hydra-Nutrition moisturizer.
Usually these celebrity press luncheons are stiff and cold — the celebrity will stay for maybe an hour, then icily slip out with a restrained “bye.” But not Keaton. The 64-year-old charmed the pants off us jaded journalists with her quick wit, candor and warmth (and hugged and kissed us all on her way out — after two hours of lively discussion).
She chatted with the group, and individually, about architecture, the state of the magazine industry (dour), how she bought a house at the wrong time in the market — “this fucking house is going to be the death of me,” she said. “No one will ever buy it.” — and how crazy she is for structured (not knit) fashion. “You can’t destroy a Marni piece if you tried,” she noted. “It’s always going to be the same shape.”
Over prawns and steak, Keaton talked a little about being a spokeswoman for L’Oreal (she’s on her third year), noting how representing older women is a real thrill. Dressed in a leather Rick Owens blazer (that she joyfully announced was bought for her by L’Oreal), a pencil skirt, glasses and one of her trademark boat hats, her look did not disappoint. Part Annie Hall, part bookworm, it was 100 percent chic.
