Jack Spade: still stylin’ in 2010

Jack SpadeWhen I hear the name Kate Spade, I can’t help but cringe and think back to the New Jersey undergrad gals sporting totes, clutches and book bags from the designer as they traversed the frigid University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. The cringe is two-fold: I never appreciated the design, and most of what I saw was so obviously purchased on Canal Street with a fistful of fives.

Jack Spade, however, has put out consistent collections year after year. I was heartened to see his fall 2010 collection on We Are the Market, the often-fantastic blog penned by the fashion PR firm and showroom BPMW (Brand Pimps and Media Whores, FYI). The leather goods don’t come close to the elegant travel bags made by brands like WANT Les Essentiels de la Vie, but the red wool Bleacher Plaid duffle (shown here) is a delightful weekend bag.

View more of the collection here. Clearly it won’t be on retail shelves anytime soon, but on his website, Spade has other Valentine’s Day offerings for under $100 and $200. The wool check key holder would bring a little spiff to your boyfriend’s car key jangle—a nice addition to the dogearred Ralph’s club card hanging from it that can hardly be described as an accessory. —Krista Jennings
