Unholy Matrimony to debut a new art-retail space

UM 2010 Women 3Unholy Matrimony, one of the edgiest brands in town, is gearing up to launch its first-ever store — a hybrid art-retail space on La Brea Avenue (two doors down from American Rag Cie).

The 2,100-square-foot space, which will open on Jan. 30 with an in-store party, is actually called Case Study Unholy Matrimony — as it’s a collaboration between Unholy’s designer, Brett Westfall, and Amir Gharavi, who owns the brand Case Study, along with Anastasia, a Laguna Beach-based retail temple of avant-garde fashion.

The new digs will also serve as Unholy Matrimony’s new headquarters. Westfall, who helmed the year-long Comme des Garcon Guerrilla store downtown when it was open, has collaborated on collections with CDG and L.A. men’s brand KZO in the past — and will carry edgy brands including Unholy Matrimony, Kris Van Asche, Maison Martin Margiela, Peachoo & Krejberg, Hussein Chalayan, Sonia Boyajian and Junya Watanabe in the new store.

The art side of the store will debut an exhibition of paintings and installations, ‘Voices of Nature,’ by Westfall and KZO designer Joel Knoernschild that first debuted in Osaka, Japan.

Get thee to the party — on Jan. 30 from 6 to 10 p.m. at 138-140 N. La Brea Ave. — to hear the raucous sounds of Barnacle, Westfall and Knoernschild’s heavy metal instrumental band.
