Mercedes-Benz released their official fall 2010 New York fashion week schedule today, and the week marks the last time the shows will be held in the Bryant Park tents before relocating to Lincoln Center in September.
From February 11-18, there are 79 shows scheduled — six more than last year. But the small gain is still a far cry from the 101 shows scheduled for fall of 2007, or more commonly known as “before the financial world threw up on us.”
With the exception of Matthew Williamson and William Rast, most major names who showed a year ago are still on the February line-up. Expect to see looks from usual suspects Calvin Klein, Diane Von Furstenberg and Ralph Lauren gracing the runway. But where you really notice just how much fall fashion week has changed is when glancing at that 101-show schedule from fall, 2007. It included the likes of Jason Wu, Betsey Johnson, Bill Blass, Temperley London, Alberta Ferretti, Peter Som, Jenni Kayne and Zac Posen — none of which will appear on Mercedes-Benz sanctioned catwalks in New York next month.
Is this unremarkable show load a result of the still-choppy economic climate or are designers simply over catering to big business when crafting their art? I wonder if things will ever get back to “normal” or if a new normal without traditional fashion shows is in the process of being birthed. Is there anyone you’re dying to see on the slightly yawn-worthy full schedule, which is visible after the jump?
