WWD reports that L.A. denim companies like Joe’s and Rock & Republic (which offers the patronizing “Recession Collection”) have shifted their core offerings well south of $300, once the magic number for a statement pair of sanded/blasted/frayed/abraded jeans. As a new decade dawns, mid-three-digit price tags for tricked-out jeans now seems more of a relic than ever. “Nobody wants ridiculously overpriced jeans,” Pittsburgh Jeans Co. owner Lawrence Scott said. “Anything over $300, they’re really not interested in it right now. Even in the mid-$200 range, you’re on shaky ground. It’s going to take a long time to get back to those higher levels.” That’s assuming we should pay those prices again in the first place.
