Mona May on Brittany Murphy

taiIf you came of age in the 1990s, you probably saw Clueless in a multiplex, marveled at the clothes, first heard the name Alaïa and wondered if kids in Beverly Hills really dressed like that (they didn’t). There was no Cher facsimile in my high school; but Tai Fraiser, Brittany Murphy’s fumbling, clutzy character with the Kool Aid-dyed hair, was everywhere. Sadly, Tai’s so-so-deep description of a near-death experience at the mall will take on a different meaning the next time I watch the film (a quarterly experience).

mona1Of the 32-year-old actress’ death on Sunday, Mona May, Clueless’ brilliant costume designer, texted Style Section L.A. with a brief memorial to the grunge-to-glam gal she worked with 15 years ago: “It’s so sad. I will always remember her when we did Clueless. She was so young and cute and innocent. She was a sweet girl.”
