Jeanne-Claude, the fire-haired dynamo who with husband Christo captivated even the most cynical of us with grandiose works of environmental art, died last night at age 74.
The couple brought Tejon Ranch to life in 1991 with their yellow umbrella installation, in tandem with a similar work in Ibaraki, Japan. The LA Times reminds us that the work was dismantled after one of the 485-lb. umbrellas blew over and sadly killed a woman. But the installation was pure splendor for those who experienced it. It’s hard to make the blond hills of Tejon any more magnificent; for Christo and Jeanne-Claude, mission accomplished.
