Boot-and-blazer-wearing hipsters flocked to changeling retail shop Space 15 Twenty for the opening of its latest pop-up on Saturday night — for Reformed, a diffusion reworked-vintage line from L.A.-based label The Reformation.
The Reformation, which is owned by Ya-Ya founder/designer Yael Aflalo and her partner, Chi Bui, specializes in re-worked vintage finds. The designers have a store in L.A. and a new shop on the Lower East Side of New York.
The diffusion Reformed conceptually falls in line with The Reformation, offering limited-edition pieces made from vintage fabrics. Only it’s cheaper — and therefore, a tad less detailed.
Perusing through the racks, I was struck on several occasions with the same satisfaction I feel when I score an amazing designer piece at Goodwill, or a perfectly fitting dress at the Rose Bowl. There were drapey velvet vests, leather bags, blousey tops and even a studded bustier dress, all at surprisingly affordable prices (under $100).
The line’s silk floral dresses were reminiscent of 90s grunge, but were made modern with chunky zippers and cutout panels. Fringe and lace were scattered throughout on silky jumpers and stiff-shouldered jackets, lending the collection some cohesiveness.
All in all, an imminently wearable (and affordable) collection. Which is all we could ever really ask for.
