Founders of the ‘Forever 21 Report’ Teach Us How to Shop the Discount Fashion Mecca

Picture 10Forever21Report.com, a new site launched by L.A. style writers Sydne Summer and Jennifer Cady, features daily reviews of F21 merch, styling tips and ways to throw together celebrity looks for less  — all hinged on the mall-based Mecca of fast fashion. Cute idea, right?

Here’s a fistful of insider advice from the girls, meant to maximize your F21 shopping excursions:

Analyzing the F21 landscape in L.A.

We skip the Grove because it’s so small and crammed with tourists, not to mention it’s the messiest. The Promenade is overwhelming, but we’ll go everyone once in a while — usually on weeknights to avoid the crowds. The selection at Glendale Galleria isn’t the best, because it doesn’t carry all the lines, but it’s never super-crowded.  The Pasadena store is two stories tall,  but not as overwhelming as Santa Monica—plus, they carry the elusive Love 21 contemporary line, which is Forever’s newest collection geared towards 20 and 30-somethings, not teens.

But because we live so close, we usually go to Beverly Center, which has a really great layout because Heritage, Twelve by Twelve and all the other lines are sectionalized. Plus, they have a separate accessories store downstairs called ForLove21. It’s much easier to try on shoes when you’re not surrounded by racks of clothing.

Picture 11Important Do’s and Don’t's

  1. Stay away from the store’s poly-blend shiny satin fabric. Nine times out of ten it comes off looking really cheap.
  2. If you see something on the mannequin you like, buy it that day. Things sell out way faster when shoppers are able to get an idea of how to style it.
  3. Don’t be afraid to D.I.Y. Forever 21 often gets bow-happy, so feel free to rip unwanted elements off the minute you leave the store — and don’t let them stop you from buying otherwise killer silhouettes.
  4. Always cut the clear hanger straps off your clothing the minute you get home. It’s a dead giveaway that what you’re wearing is a $20 dress.
  5. Go for matte instead of shiny when it comes to shoes, jewelry and leather. Again, the cheap-looking factor comes into play.
