Band of Outsiders Designer Scott Sternberg Leaves His Middle Class Life Behind as KCRW Guest DJ

Scott SternbergHere’s a cool find from our friends at local radio station KCRW (which happens to be the home of DJ Mathieu Schreyer, who appeared on our list of tastemakers last month).

In September, Band of Outsiders clothing designer Scott Sternberg appeared on the station’s airwaves as part of its Guest DJ Project and talked about the songs that inspire his sartorial vision.

Sternberg’s list of melodic muses includes the likes of Morrissey, Donovan and the Magnetic Fields.

But our favorite pick has to be “Take Your Carriage Clock and Shove It” by Bell & Sebastian. Not for the song, but for Sternberg’s reason behind it:

“It’s just about this middle-class working guy who quits his job, basically, after a lifelong career at some boring, boring middle class job, just picks up and leaves and I just think it’s good.”

Coincidentally, Sternberg was an agent at CAA before leaving to start his label in 2004. Since he wasn’t stuck in the mail room when he decided to switch careers we’re guessing his salary was a bit beyond that of “middle class.” But still, way cool idea on the importance of following your passion.
