Jerell Scott, one of the most likable Project Runway designers ever, rolled out a runway show at the MOCA Geffen Contemporary that left me scratching my head.
Weren’t his clothes on the show kinda simple and chic? Apparently that mode of design is ancient history for the L.A.-based designer.
For Spring 2010, Scott threw about a thousand style elements into a single pot and stirred. Among the flotsam were two obvious themes: tribal (via raffia-style details, prints and headress-inspired headbands and hairdos) and 80s Excess, courtesy of enough sequins to choke Alexis Carrington.
Seperately, these motifs are charming. Together? At times, tragic. But on the rare occasion Scott ran with one or the other, some cute things started happening. A silver minidress (above) was a fashion-forward stand-out, as were a few gold-tinged evening ensembles.
Backstage after the show, Scott dished on the collection, noting that he was going for a “young Hollywood” vibe. As for his time on Project Runway, he noted, “There’s no greater catalyst for a designer than that show and I’m so appreciative to have had that experience.”
And on the show’s switch to Lifetime: “I love it! The addition of Models of the Runway is addictive. Their recipe is delicious, and I want to have another bowl.”
