We know, you haven’t thought of wearing your hair in the half-up, half-down style since Kelly Kapowski’s scrunchy socks felt like high fashion.
But the circa ’80s style (sans the bulbous, laquered bangs) is suddenly getting some play in the fashion universe. The modern take is looser and more romantic than the Goody barrette-secured style you remember rocking to the roller rink. But its roots are still totally ’80s.
We’ve spotted long-haired girls around town wearing the retro style, and at the Rag & Bone Spring 2010 show, Frederic Fekkai’s hair team created an ethereal half-up, half-down style that actually feels more Queen Elizabeth than Alexis Carrington.
Stylist Teddy Charles said the key to creating the style was putting down the brush and using a styling spray to create a “piecey” look with his hands. (Charles used Fekkai’s Wave Creating Spray, but any styling lotion will work.) Then, “using a comb, I back-teased the pieces for volume,” said Charles. Eventually, he secured it all with a few hidden bobby pins. “I wanted the look to be simple and sexy, like she just rolled out of bed.”
A far-cry from the Kapowski bouffant.
