The Shows: Rodarte’s Primitive Future

Rodarte spring 2010

For Spring, Rodarte introduced us to its tribal-gothic-Highlander woman, a rare breed that dwells in the Rick Owens-strewn basement of Maxfield.

I jest. The blatant hodgepodge of cultural archetypes present in the show was actually fascinating.

The parade of hand-worked looks — black witchy gowns, kilt-inspired cocktail dresses using ombre and other ethic fabrics, severe black trousers with Matrix-style deconstructed tops and what can only be described as “evil mermaid” dresses (see left) — dipped, on occasion, into costumey realms, but were always intriguing.

The Pasadena, Calif.-based designing sisters behind the brand, Laura and Kate Mulleavy, evolved their intricate wrapped-and-tucked-fabric style for this collection, a set of techniques that still feel futuristic and edgy. Never mind “wearable.” The stunning craftsmanship and sheer dramatic impact of the looks can’t be denied.
