Urban Outfitters: Fall Finds and Faux Pas

Picture 17Urban Outfitters, clothier to broke hipsters and trustafarians alike (Carolina Herrera shops there) rolled out its new fall catalog this week — and amongst the overpriced ’80s rehashes you could nab at the local Goodwill for a mere $2, there are treasures to behold.

The Hits:

*You can sink thousands into a YSL or Stella McCartney boyfriend blazer this fall, or pick up this fetching Silence & Noise gray beauty for a mere $78 (see photo). Roomy, with inseams in all the right places, this jacket manages to escape frumpiness, and with a tight 80s Herve Leger-esque frock would be downright smokin’. Wear it with Lucca Couture’s flirty Back Zip Blouse and you’ve got the perfect get-up for the not-quite-fall days.

*I’ve always approached animal prints with caution (and animals with prints, for that matter),  but Urban’s got me hooked via this edgy Cheetah Tank, which can be rocked in the office or out for a night of cocktails. And these whimsical Peacock Earrings are the perfect accoutrement for a simple jeans-and-blazer look.

The Misses:

*True to form, the brains at Urban Outfitters also created another season’s worth of body-unfriendly fodder that will surely die on the sale rack. As a child of the’ 80s, I’m a sucker for the era’s kooky looks, but a Ruffle Front Dress is better left to Dolly and Jane in 9-5. And here’s a reality check: jumpers don’t look good on anyone. Ever. Unless you’re Marisa Tomei. And let’s pass on the Denim and Leather Jacket this season, too, okay? No one needs to hit the clubs looking like a bleary-eyed hasher straight out of Detroit Rock City.
